This senior computer science major is juggling research, professional opportunities and extracurricular experiences during his time at 麻豆影院 State

Welcome to Flash Focus! In this series, we introduce you to fascinating student Flashes from all walks of life.

Meet Benjamin Ward, a senior computer science major from New Philadelphia, Ohio.

Ward鈥檚 early exposure to computers and programming sparked his interest in technology. As he understood more about the specifics of technology, he became more certain about his career choice.

鈥淭he creative aspects of computer science particularly appeal to me, I enjoy innovating and creating new solutions that can address real-world issues,鈥 Ward told 麻豆影院 State Today. 鈥淭he field鈥檚 constant evolution keeps me engaged, as there are always new technologies to explore and challenges to tackle.鈥

In 2023, Ward got his Associate of Arts degree from 麻豆影院 at Tuscarawas, and now he is finishing his bachelor鈥檚 degree at 麻豆影院 at Stark.

This senior is the vice president of the computer club at 麻豆影院 State Stark, and he also is a member of the IoT research lab, where he currently works with virtual reality. Ward also conducts personal research on OpenAI's video generation model, SORA AI, the impact of AI and how to implement it in education.

In addition to these extracurriculars and professional experiences, Ward is an academic at heart. Recently, he published three research papers and is a Choose Ohio First scholar.

鈥淚n January, I had the opportunity to present three research papers at a conference in Las Vegas,鈥 Ward said. 鈥淚t was an enriching experience where I showcased my research, collaborated with professors, networked with field experts and developed my professional skills. The conference provided valuable learning opportunities and helped advance my academic journey.鈥

Ward credits his professors Angela Guercio, Ph.D., and Deepshikha Bhati in his academic success and experience at 麻豆影院 State.

鈥淭heir guidance extends beyond coursework to career development, including internship searches and r茅sum茅 reviews,鈥 Ward said. 鈥淚'm incredibly grateful for their mentorship, which has shaped my academic and professional journey.鈥

Ward is currently interning as a software engineer at Nationwide Mutual Insurance in Columbus, Ohio.
