Members of ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ State’s chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ) traveled to Indianapolis for the 2016 PRSSA National Conference to attend workshops on topics like job application training, chapter development, public relations skills and professional networking.

To top off the trip, the Chapter and its members won multiple national awards:

  • The Chapter was awarded the Dr. F.H. Teahan Chapter Award for Chapter Diversity and Star Chapter Award.
  • Public relations majors Hanna Moore, 17, and Brenna Parker, β€˜17, both won the National President’s Citation.
  • Public relations major Gabrielle Woodard, β€˜17, won the Gold Key Award.

PRSSA ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ competes with more than 300 chapters nationwide for these awards.

The Teahan Chapter Award is the highest national honor for a PRSSA chapter. PRSSA ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ received the Diversity Award for the first time this year. Only five chapters are awarded the Teahan Chapter Award, and only one receives the Diversity Award.

β€œLast year, our Chapter focused on increasing our diversity initiatives and started measuring the diversity of our members in various ways,” said Erin Zaranec, β€˜17, public relations major and PRSSA ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ Chapter president.

During spring 2016 semester, the group collaborated with Black United Students and Modista Fashion Group to promote diversity through majors, gender and ethnicity. New community service initiatives, recruitment and programming also helped PRSSA ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ win its fifth consecutive Star Chapter Award.

All of the individual awards are given to students with significant contributions to their chapter. Specifically, the Gold Key Award, given to Woodard, is the highest individual PRSSA honor. This award is given to a student who excels in chapter leadership, academics and professional development.

The National President’s Citation Award, given to Moore and Parker, is specifically awarded to students who make significant contributions to PRSSA at the chapter and national level.

β€œIn PRSSA, no position is small, and everyone from our officers, to our members, to our professional and faculty advisers worked to help us achieve our goals and get these awards,” said Zaranec.

At the conference, the ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ State public relations program officially received PRSA’s Certification in Education for Public Relations (CEPR). Associate Lecturer Timothy Roberts and Associate Professor Michele Ewing attended the presentation, where ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ State was recognized in front of the National PRSA board and the entire PRSA delegation. With this certification, ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ State is the only undergraduate public relations program in Ohio with ACEJMC accreditation and CEPR certification.

β€œIt is representative of the quality of our program and the quality of our students,” said Roberts.

β€œWe owed it to the students to get the CEPR accreditation because they have elevated the program. The CEPR accreditation is a reflection of that,” he said.

Students in the School of Media and Journalism recently received recognition from two prestigious student journalism competitions: The Hearst Journalism Awards and the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Mark of Excellence Awards.

Media and Journalism Students, Alumni Recognized with Diversity Awards

Each year, the School of Media and Journalism’s Diversity and Globalization Committee recognizes students and their work with The Robert G. McGruder Student Award for Diversity, in honor of the late Robert G McGruder, a 1963 ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ graduate, and a trail-blazing journalist.

Students Nationally Recognized for Public Relations Work

Two teams of ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ State Media and Journalism students are being honored nationally for their work building public relations campaigns for Lymphoma Research Foundation (LRF).

Throughout the Spring 2022 semester, the students participated in the National Bateman Case Study Competition, hosted by the Public Relations Student Society of America. Out of more than 50 entries, both teams of ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ State students earned honorable mentions for their work. This is the ninth time in 10 years that a ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ State team has been recognized among the top tier of submissions for this competition.

β€˜Armed With Our Voices’ May 4 Poetry Exhibit Opens at ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ State Student Center

A new interactive exhibit from the Wick Poetry Center that encouraged visitors to explore the history of student protest through the ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ State shootings, has opened in the ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ Student Center as part of May 4 commemoration activities.

Assistant Professor Abraham Avnisan is an interdisciplinary artist whose work is found at the intersection of image, text and code, often centering on culture and justice. Students Implement Public Relations Tactics to Raise Awareness for Lymphoma Research

Teams of ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ State Media and Journalism students have been spreading awareness and education about lymphoma this spring as part of a national public relations competition. 

Changing the Future for Black Journalists

In the United States, only about five percent of journalists are Black or African-American, according to Zippia.com. 

Zaria Johnson, senior journalism major at ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ, is making history as the first Black female editor-in-chief of the ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ Stater and ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊWired.com She is a fierce advocate for representation in ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ State Student Media and beyond.

The argument for studying journalism has never been stronger. Just a quick glance at the news makes the case. We’re training students who will graduate equipped with strong writing skills – still the number one most important skill set according to all employers with whom I interact; technical skills to communicate using whatever equipment, software and tools are available; and the ethical decision-making skills necessary to function in a world where decisions are rarely cut and dry.

The College of Communication and Information at ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ announces the appointment of Katrina Chandler as the new director of ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ State Student Media.

Lifetime Achievements

Until their recent retirements, Candace Perkins Bowen and John Bowen, along with Mark Goodman, were the heart and soul of the Center for Scholastic Journalism. Combined, this trio has contributed more than 140 years of service to scholastic journalism. Each will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Journalism Education Association (JEA) at this fall’s National High School Journalism Convention in Philadelphia.

A One-of-a-Kind Graduate Program Gets a Makeover

A new degree program titled the Master of Arts in Journalism Education received its final approval from Ohio’s Department of Higher Education this summer. Since 2007, we have been training journalism educators in a concentration of the Master of Arts degree in Media and Journalism. Starting this fall, students are pursuing a standalone degree in journalism education.

This shift from a concentration to a standalone degree might seem minor but it gives our graduate program more focus and flexibility. Ours is the only master’s program solely dedicated to journalism education.
