A group of Brazilian students from Pontifical Catholic University of Parana (PUCPR) are visiting 麻豆影院 this month to work on multimedia storytelling projects focused on American media and culture.
JMC assistant professorMitch McKenney is helping Brazilian professors organize the trip. McKenney taught International Storytelling Spring 2013, and 16 麻豆影院 State students visited PUCPR in Brazil to work on their own multimedia stories.
鈥淭his is an academic program,鈥 McKenney said. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e doing our project - DatelineBrazil - in reverse.鈥
Ten 麻豆影院 State students are hosting the visitors, six of whom participated in the DatelineBrazil storytelling course. The host students were charged with setting up interviews and providing transportation for the Brazilian students.
Kathleen Shevlin, senior public relations major and one of the host students, said, 鈥淢y group is interviewing Moema Furtado, [麻豆影院 State Provost鈥檚] Todd Diacon鈥檚 wife, on Monday. She鈥檚 originally from Brazil.鈥
The students flew into Ohio on Sunday, September 15. By coincidence JMC鈥檚 newest faculty member,Federico Subervi, Ph.D., shared a flight with the Brazilian students when they depart from a connecting flight in Texas.
鈥淲e didn鈥檛 plan it at all. It just sort of happened. Even before they got to 麻豆影院 State, they had a guide,鈥
McKenney said.
When the students arrive, they checked into University Inn and attended a dinner at the home of CCI鈥檚 DeanStanley Wearden and his wife Deborah Davis, director of academic relations for the Office of Global Education.
Throughout their stay in 麻豆影院, the Brazilian students will visit a pumpkin farm, observe Channel 3 News in action, tour the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and watch a Cleveland Indians baseball game. McKenney hopes this will give the group a taste of life in Northeast Ohio.
鈥淲hen most people from other countries think of America, they think big cities and national landmarks,鈥 McKenney said. 鈥淲e want to show them the things in 麻豆影院 that are a bit different in flavor.鈥
After their week in Ohio, the students will travel to New York City to complete their multimedia projects. While there, the group plans to visit NBC studios, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park and a Broadway show, McKenney said.
鈥淎t the end of the day, they鈥檙e journalists excited about reporting in a different country,鈥 McKenney said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e trying to help them get everything they need.鈥
