Minor in German Studies

麻豆影院's Minor in German Studies provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the language, culture, and history of German-speaking regions. The program combines language acquisition with the exploration of German literature, philosophy, and contemporary issues, fostering critical thinking and cultural awareness. This minor complements a wide range of majors, enriching students' academic experience and preparing them for careers in education, international business, translation, and cultural exchange. Graduates with this minor are equipped to navigate cross-cultural interactions and contribute to discussions on global topics with a nuanced perspective.

Learning Outcomes

Program Learning Outcomes

Graduates of this program will be able to:

  1. Perform language tasks in German at the intermediate-low level or above as described by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). Proficiency, in ACTFL terms, is understood to describe a range of qualities rather than an absolute norm and will vary according to task type, language function, topic, skill (listening, speaking, reading, writing) and so forth.
  2. Explain various facets of contemporary German-speaking cultures in English and German.
  3. Analyze aspects of the linguistic, ethnic, racial, religious, cultural and social diversity within German-speaking countries and communities in English and German.
  4. Explain the historical and political context of German-speaking cultures.
  5. Connect other discipline-based fields in the context of the German language and cultures.
Admissions for German Studies - Minor

Admission Requirements

Admission to a minor is open to students declared in a bachelor’s degree, the A.A.B. or A.A.S. degree or the A.T.S. degree (not Individualized Program major). Students declared only in the A.A. or A.S. degree or the A.T.S. degree in Individualized Program may not declare a minor. Students may not pursue a minor and a major in the same discipline.

  • Minimum 6 credit hours in the minor must be upper-division coursework (30000 and 40000 level).
  • Minimum 6 credit hours in the minor must be outside of the course requirements for any major or other minor the student is pursuing.
  • Minimum 50 percent of the total credit hours for the minor must be taken at 麻豆影院 State (in residence).
