In keeping with Â鶹ӰԺ State’s commitment to wellness, the Division of Human Resources' wellness team is excited to partner with the School of Health Sciences to launch a new Faculty/Staff Exercise Program. This program will run 12 weeks per session and will be housed in the Gym Annex off of Midway Drive on the Â鶹ӰԺ Campus. The program will launch on July 15 with two possible time options to meet your needs. Option 1 will meet on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6 a.m. Option 2 will be offered Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at noon.
This program is specifically designed to assist those individuals who may benefit from a more structured and personal exercise program due to a sedentary lifestyle (not currently participating in at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity three days/week for at least three months) or for individuals who may have some risk factors that require more supervision, such as hypertension, diabetes, family history of heart or coronary disease, metabolic disease, etc.
The Faculty/Staff Exercise program will offer individualized exercise programs that includes:
Warm-up: Stretching and calisthenics (20-25 minutes)
Aerobics: Walking/jogging/elliptical: (20-30 minutes) continuous or discontinuous based on the participants’ level of fitness.
Anaerobic: Using lightweights to strengthen a given muscle group through the range of motion (optional: 10-15 minutes).
Cool-down: Stretching and relaxation exercises (5-10 minutes).
Each enrollee will be asked to complete consent, waiver and release forms; a workers’ compensation waiver and a medical clearance form. The medical clearance form must be completed by your physician and returned to the School of Health Sciences. In addition, and for your benefit, trained staff will perform the following tests in order to write an appropriate exercise program for each participant, which will remain confidential:
- Body Composition: Height, weight, skinfolds
- Lung Capacity: Lung function with a pulmonary function test
- Cardiovascular Parameters: Resting heart rate and blood pressure
- Aerobic Capacity: Cooper 12-min walk test or 1.5 mile run (depending upon activity level)
- Anaerobic Tests: Handgrip dynamometer
- Muscular Endurance: Curl-ups and push-ups in one minute
- Flexibility: Sit and reach test (modified for the older adult or less fit)
- Balance: Biodex testing
- Blood Analysis: Complete blood count (i.e., CBC, Hb, Hct, Glucose, Lipids, HDL, LDL, Trig)
- Cognitive and Psychological Testing: Profile of mood state, memory, ability to learn, attention (with Gunstad laboratory)
As you progress through the program, your certified American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) trainer will re-write your exercise prescription to increase goals aligned with overall health and cardiovascular fitness, and energy expenditure.
Each 12-week program will cost $50 per person, and payment can be made when you attend your first session. This covers all costs associated with staff, equipment and health screenings conducted during each 12-week program.
