Grants 101: Developing a Winning Grant Proposal

This year long workshop is geared to any faculty member who is intending to submit a grant proposal. The sessions listed below are designed to facilitate grant development and keep the faculty member on track for submission. Date, Time and Location will be announced at a later date.

  • Session 1: Getting an Idea

How do you come up with a good idea? How do you operationalize your idea? How do you tell whether the idea is good/interesting to others? Discussion will focus on determining whether funding is available for your idea, talking to program officers about your idea, and soliciting input from others. Homework will include talking to a program officer and getting feedback on your idea.

  • Session 2: What Kind of Grant are You Pursuing

What type of funding agency/mechanism works best for your idea? Homework: Identify program announcements and requests for applications.

  • Session 3: Are You Ready to Get Started Preparing the Proposal?

Do you have the necessary expertise/track record to submit your idea? Homework: Writing your biosketch.

  • Session 4: Building Your Budget

​â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹Homework: Working with sponsored programs to develop a draft budget that will inform the design of your study.

  • Session 5: Building a Research Team

​â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â€‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â€‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹How do you identify collaborators, what kind of team do you need? Homework: assembling the team/writing the personnel justification. 

  • Session 6: Specific Aims/Primary Goals

​â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â€‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â€‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹What should go into the specific aims/goals? How many aims/goals should you have? Homework: writing your specific aims/goals.

  • Session 7: Writing Workshops

​â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹Separate workshops will focus on the different sections of the proposal. Attendees will give feedback on each other’s sections.  These workshops will be tailored to specific sections of grants: Background, Innovation, Broader Impact etc.

  • Session 8: Reviewing Proposals

​â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â€‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹This workshop will cover what happens during study sections, review criteria etc. Homework will include reviewing each other’s proposals as well as identifying an external reviewer to review your own proposal.
