Noel Card, Ph.D.
Professor of Human Development & Family Studies
University of Connecticut
Dr. Noel Card is Professor of Human Development and Family Studies at the University of Connecticut, . His research interests are in developmental science and quantitative methods. His developmental research has focused primarily on child and adolescent social development, with specific interests in aggression, peer relationships, and character strengths. His methodological interests include structural equation modeling, longitudinal analysis, and meta-analysis. He is the author of Applied Meta-Analysis for Social Science Research (2012, Guilford Press) .
This two-day workshop on Meta-Analysis will guide attendees through the major steps of meta-analysis, including the reasons for meta-analysis, searching and coding the literature, basic analyses, and write-up. Participants are expected to have a working knowledge of ANOVA and/or multiple regression. Instruction consists primarily of lecture, though we will reserve the last hour of each day for individual or small-group consultation. The emphasis will be practical with minimal emphasis on statistical underpinnings. The material will be presented independent of any specific computer program; instead, participants will learn to conduct analyses using software with which they are familiar (e.g., Excel, SPSS, SAS, R).
By the end of this seminar, attendees will learn the necessary tools to conduct a publishable meta-analysis. This seminar will also equip students to understand and critically evaluate meta-analyses that they read. Finally, this seminar can serve as the foundation for learning more advanced topics in meta-analysis.
