ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ State Trumpeter Excels in Scholarship Competition

ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ State student Stephen Stavnicky won the brass portion of Tuesday Musical's 2022 Annual Scholarship Competition, earning the $2,000 Arden J. Yockey Scholarship. He performed the first movement of Franz Joseph Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto in E-flat Major, the first movement of Sonata for Trumpet and Piano by Eric Ewazen, and β€œIntrada” by Otto Ketting.

Stavnicky is in his final year of Trumpet Performance at ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ State studying under Amanda Bekeny. He performs and teaches in Northeast Ohio both as a trumpet player and a bass/baritone singer. He has worked with groups such as the Cleveland Winds and the Cleveland Chamber Choir and acted as a substitute musician with orchestras like the Wooster Symphony and Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra. His other trumpet teachers include Jack Sutte and Lyle Steelman (both of the Cleveland Orchestra), and Olivia Shelton. His voice teachers include Lara Troyer, Peter Bush, and JosΓ© Gotera. On completion of his studies, he plans to pursue a Masters in Trumpet Performance.

You can hear Stavnicky and the other first- and second-place competitors at the follow-up concert on Sunday, May 15, 2:30 p.m. at The University of Akron’s Guzzetta Recital Hall, 157 University Avenue, Akron, Ohio. The musicians will be competing for two additional scholarship prizes. Further, the audience will be invited to pick the winner of the $500 John M. Ream Jr. DDS People's Choice Award. Both the concert and the post-concert reception are free and open to the public.
