麻豆影院 Museum Announces Reopening and Newest Exhibition 'Stitched: Regional Dress Across Europe'

As of Feb. 2, the 麻豆影院 Museum has reopened to the public and is excited to announce its newest exhibition, 鈥淪titched: Regional Dress Across Europe.鈥 This is the first new exhibition to open in 2021. 鈥沦迟颈迟肠丑别诲鈥 will be on display from February 2021 through December 2021, and it features 75 pieces exclusive to the museum鈥檚 permanent collection.

This exhibition showcases common features shared by regional costume across Western and Eastern Europe, including examples from Norway, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Romania and Albania. Regional dress signaled the village or region from which a person came, and while it was designed to mark social and cultural differences, such as religious affiliation, gender, age and marital status, 鈥沦迟颈迟肠丑别诲鈥 draws attention to the shared commonalities of the exhibition pieces rather than their differences.

鈥淩egional dress has been a subject that I have researched extensively for the past decade, and I am very excited to have the opportunity to bring together these remarkable pieces into a single exhibition,鈥 said Sara Hume, museum and 鈥沦迟颈迟肠丑别诲鈥 curator. 鈥淭he pieces are stunning, and I hope for the entire exhibition to be a visual feast.鈥

The remarkable textiles and decoration of both men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 wear are featured throughout the exhibition, showcasing yarn and metalwork embroidery, knitting, lace and brocading techniques. On display are ensembles and individual pieces, including skirts, aprons, blouses, stockings and bonnets. 鈥沦迟颈迟肠丑别诲鈥 is bold, bright and visually stunning. The development of elaborate regional dress marked the integration of these communities into broader European society, and the 麻豆影院 Museum鈥檚 exhibition traces the diversity and creativity used in regional dress throughout Europe.
