UNIVERSITY FELLOWSHIP: OMON OBAREIN

Meet Omon Obarein, a University Fellowship recipient. Omon is a Ph.D. student majoring in Geography.

Please give a short overview of your research.

My Ph.D. dissertation uses a novel multivariate weather type dataset [global weather typing classification (GWTC-2)] to explore the dependency of global and regional precipitation on synoptic air masses. The insight gained is then used to revisit patterns of regional precipitation response in a warming climate. Unlike previous studies that linked precipitation to single-variable circulation types, this project represents the first use of a gridded multivariate synoptic scale air mass in examining global and regional precipitation.

What made you choose to pursue your graduate degree here at 麻豆影院 State?

Dr. Lee (My Advisor) and Dr. Sheridan (Departmental Chair) were very nice to me and gave me the opportunity to work on NOAA funded research projects.

What do you enjoy most about attending 麻豆影院 State for graduate school? and/or What do you anticipate taking advantage of at KSU?

Currently, I enjoy teaching Physical Geography because the topics are very relevant to current events: Natural disasters and environmental degradation (The East Palestine train derailment).

What are your future goals?

I want to continue my research on precipitation forecasting and climate change, preferably in the private sector, but I also see a future in academia.

What does this award mean to you and how will it aid you?

A University Fellowship will potentially open bigger doors of opportunity for me.
