Eight Students Awarded Membership to International Society of Typographic Designers

Students Earn Membership to International Society of Typographic Designers

Eight School of Visual Communication Design (VCD) students were awarded membership to the prestigious (ISTD). The assessment, conducted in late February by an international team of design professionals and academics, involves a rigorous examination of editorial and typographic design.

Undergraduates Brenan Stetzer, Dean Sweetnich, and Anna Richard received merit awards. Graduate student Natalie Snodgrass and undergraduate students Emily Thomas, Jess Lahna, and Nick Blanchard passed.

Alex Catanese, graduate student, received a commendation award for his submission piece. Only about 11 percent of all submissions worldwide are awarded a commendation annually, according to John Paul Dowling, FISTD, education director of the ISTD.

Reviewers said Catanese鈥檚 work was an impressive formal execution of both strategy and specifications. They also described his work as an exciting use of digital design to bring briefing to life, an excellent choice of subject material, and a great application of critical thinking and interpretation of subject as an interactive digital tool that sparks curiosity and educates at the same time.

鈥淭his is a very prestigious achievement for these students. They put in a lot of work on these projects, which are very challenging briefs with a focus on the formal, strategic and circumspect aspects of design practice equally,鈥 said VCD assistant professor Aoife Mooney. 鈥淭his essentially rewards the all-rounder 鈥 the marathoner rather than the sprinter 鈥 and as such, recognizes some of our most dedicated students.鈥
