麻豆影院 State Graduate Students Win Prestigious Research Competition

Four 麻豆影院 graduate students in the Department of Psychological Sciences, in the College of Arts and Sciences, won the Sloboda and Bukoski Cup at the Society for Prevention Research鈥檚 annual conference.

Liz Baker, Karly Cochran, Haylee DeLuca and Logan Stigall represented 麻豆影院 State against five other teams from Arizona State University, Clemson University, Florida International University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and University of California, Irvine.

For the competition, the team was given a specific data set and then had eight weeks to familiarize themselves with the content, conduct a literature review, develop research questions, analyze the data and prepare a multimedia presentation that fit into the conference theme, 鈥淯sing Prevention Science to Promote Health Equity and Improve Well-Being.鈥

Baker, whose own research is on dating violence, served as the team captain and says that after hearing about the competition from her mentor, she and her labmates decided to form a team and apply.

鈥淎fter we received the data set, we were excited because it focused on interpersonal relationships, which fit really well into our own work as a lab,鈥 Baker says. 鈥淓ach team member brought their own set of skills to the project.鈥

The data set came from the Fragile Families Study and was designed to examine family life and child well-being. The 麻豆影院 State team decided to focus on positive mother-father relationships and how those positive relationships spilled over and led to healthier parenting behaviors. A key component of the team鈥檚 project was an exploration of the disparity of positive mother-father relationships between different groups of people, specifically with regard to poverty, race and family structure. The team found that spillover functioned the same way for each of these groups, such that positive mother-father relationships spilled over and led to healthier parenting behaviors all the way from birth until the child was five years old. However, they also found that parents who were experiencing poverty, were a minority, were not married and were not cohabitating all had lower levels of positive mother-father relationships at the time of their child鈥檚 birth, suggesting that interventions should focus on and tailor to these at-risk individuals early on.

Baker credited the team鈥檚 victory on the quality of their program at 麻豆影院 State.

鈥淲e have a very strong training program here that鈥檚 based on theoretical knowledge and scientific method,鈥 she says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 trained us to become critical thinkers so that we鈥檙e prepared to explore situations that are outside of our specific research areas.鈥

麻豆影院 State Psychology Professor Manfred van Dulmen, Ph.D., who serves as the students鈥 primary graduate advisor, also served as the team鈥檚 mentor for this competition. The team also was assigned a prevention science mentor from Northwestern University, C. Hendricks Brown, Ph.D. Van Dulmen believes that this victory is a testament to the team鈥檚 hard work, as well as the strength of their program at 麻豆影院 State.

鈥淭o win this early career award, which is based on empirical work with an existing data set in about eight weeks, is a major compliment to these graduate students and the training they receive,鈥 van Dulmen says.

Founded in 1991, the Society for Prevention Research is a multidisciplinary group made up of scientists, practitioners, advocates, administrators and policymaker whose goals are to advance scientific investigation 鈥渙n the etiology and prevention of social, physical and mental health and academic problems and on the translation of that information to promote health and well-being.鈥

Baker is a third-year doctoral student, and her primary research areas include romantic and peer relationships, particularly related to violence in dating relationships.

DeLuca is a third-year doctoral student, and her primary research areas include romantic and peer relationships, and methodological and measurement issues in assessing these relationships.

Cochran is a third-year doctoral student, and her primary research areas are close and romantic relationships.

Stigall is a first-year graduate student who is primarily interested in studying maintenance and satisfaction in romantic relationships.
