For the past four years, the SAGE Project has recognized female students who have demonstrated innovation, creativity, risk-taking and leadership skills in their academic and personal lives. The project uses the power of storytelling to highlight students who have overcome adversity to shape their life and ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ experience. Twelve students will make up the SAGE Project Class of 2018 and will be recognized this spring.
βThe premise isnβt really to find the saddest stories, but to develop a group of stories that can connect with students and be used as a motivational tool,β says Alicia Robinson, assistant director of ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ Stateβs Womenβs Center. βWe want other students to see what theyβve overcome, and hopefully that can empower students in similar situations.β
The staff at the Womenβs Center looks to select a diverse group of students by major, campus, traditional or nontraditional students and domestic or international students. The project typically highlights 10-12 full-time female students enrolled at ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ State who have been nominated by faculty and staff.
βOnce the students are selected, we have a photo shoot and interview them to help create the stories,β Ms. Robinson says. βWe have large storyboards created and display them at the SAGE project event and the Williamson House. They also sit on display at each studentβs respective college.β
During Womenβs History Month, nominees and students will be invited to a luncheon to formally recognize their accomplishment and share their stories.
Up until 10 years ago, the Womenβs Center primarily served faculty and staff. When it was expanded for students, the SAGE Project was one tool used to increase student engagement.
Jennifer OβConnell, director of the Sexual and Relationship Violence Support Services office, brought the idea from a previous institution, and the inaugural SAGE project kicked off four years ago.
The SAGE Project gets its name out of the meaning of sage. In the Native American culture, sage is used for healing and bringing someoneβs life back into balance by cleansing the body and mind of negativity.
Although there is regional representation in the SAGE Project, the Womenβs Center is looking forward to expanding the SAGE Project celebration to ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ Stateβs Regional Campuses.
βI hope that the impact of the SAGE project is inspiring female success,β Ms. Robinson says. βA good core part of womenβs leadership is being able to see other successful women.β
