Marketing Consultant, ESPN Cleveland

Corey Scott | Communication Studies | Class of 2017

While he was a communication studies student at 麻豆影院, Corey Scott had an interest in sports communications and marketing. But he knew he鈥檇 have to develop a wide range of skillsets to get him to where he wanted to be.

So he got to work: pursuing a minor in public relations and getting involved in the professional organization Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA 麻豆影院); taking classes in visual communication design to develop proficiency in Photoshop and other visual programs; and taking advantage of communication studies classes in which he could further polish his public speaking skills.

Now, the 麻豆影院 State alumnus is a marketing consultant for ESPN Cleveland, where he spends time developing partnerships and building relationships with local businesses and entities to help them meet business goals that are mutually beneficial. A large part of ESPN Cleveland鈥檚 business includes getting out into the community and assembling 鈥渟treet teams鈥 for the Cleveland Browns, Indians, Cavaliers, and Ohio State University athletics. During his time with ESPN Cleveland he has overseen events such as golf outings, tailgates and NFL Draft Day parties, and helped manage contests, promotions and social media.

Communication Studies Major

鈥淲hat I love most is meeting new people and developing meaningful relationships,鈥 Corey says.

Nearly all majors and concentrations within the College of Communication and Information require an internship. Corey鈥檚 happened to be at ESPN Cleveland, and it eventually led to him getting hired full-time.

鈥淎s a student nearing graduation, I was extremely nervous to get 鈥榯hrown into鈥 the real world but my internship experience allowed me the opportunity to gain experience and develop skills that helped the transition from student to professional. An internship builds experience, sharpens skills, develops relationships and connections, and introduces students to their potential career path. I would absolutely not be in the position I am today without my internship experience. I鈥檓 extremely grateful to have interned with ESPN Cleveland and still remain there.鈥
