For the eighth consecutive year, Mietek Jaroniec, Ph.D., professor emeritus in ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ Stateβs Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, has been ranked in the top 1% of both chemistry and materials science researchers cited in the world. This ranking, based on citations in , highlights individuals who have displayed significant contributions and influence in their field of work.
Jaroniec has over 1,000 publications, has been cited a total of 110,600 times and has an h-index of 142. This index is a measurement in the world of science that determines the impact and productivity of someoneβs work that was published over a certain time period.
His primary research topics are in adsorption, chemistry of nanomaterials and chemical separations.
βWhat inspires me is difficult to say,β Jaroniec said. βIn high school, I really liked chemistry. I was always interested in research from the beginning. I think that research is not only a profession, but for many scientists including me, you can learn something more and you can discover new things. Itβs nice to get this feeling. This is my driving force.β
ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ Dr. Jaroniec
Before joining the faculty at ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ State in 1991, Jaroniec obtained his masterβs and Ph.D. degrees in chemistry at the Marie Curie-Sklodowska University in Poland in 1972 and 1976 and a Doctor of Science degree in physical chemistry in 1979 before serving as a professor there in the Department of Theoretical Chemistry from 1972 to 1991.
Jaroniec has earned several honors and awards from all over the world, including the Distinguished Scholar Award (2002), Advisor Excellence Award (2007), College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Teacher Award (2010) and the Presidentβs Faculty Excellence Award (2016, 2022) at ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ State. Some other awards and distinctions include M. Curie-Sklodowska Medal for scientific achievements from the Polish Chem. Soc. (2016), the Darsh Wasan Journal of Colloid and Interface Science Award (2019), and Doctor Honoris Causa degrees from N. Copernicus University in Poland (2009), Military Technical University in Poland (2010) and Poznan University of Technology in Poland (2018). He has served on several journal advisory and editorial boards and is a member of several scientific organizations including the American Chemical Society. Since 2019 he is an Academic Deputy Editor of Science Advances published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). He has edited several books and published more than 1,000 scientific articles and communications in international journals.
Collaborative research continues
Though he retired from teaching last year, he is not done doing research.
βI still do research,β Jaroniec said. βIβm still writing publications and have some collaborations with others in Australia, Europe (including Poland) and here at ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ State.β
