REQUEST A WORKSHOP

Faculty, staff, and student organizations can request live workshops delivered by ASC staff on topics such as time management and creating effective study tools. Need something more immediate? Check out our on-demand workshop videos!

ASC Overview - 15 minutes 
An overview of student support services offered by the Academic Success Center. 
 
Intro to Academic Coaching - 50 minutes 
Designed to introduce the Peer Academic Coaching program, participants will learn of the benefits of the program and participate in select skill based activities. 
 
Time Management - 50 minutes 
Designed to introduce time management skills. Prioritize tasks with varying importance and conflicting timelines, Creating a to-do list and weekly schedule, and identify electronic time management tools. 
 
Note Taking - 50 minutes 
Designed to explain the purpose of lecture preparation techniques, recognize common note-taking methods and abbreviations, use an effective note-taking method and discuss how to use class notes to prepare for exams. 
 
Test Taking - 50 minutes 
Designed to create a study plan for your next exam, identify tips and tricks to look for during an exam, and help to determine areas of improvement for your next test. 
 
Creative Effective Study Tools - 50 minutes

REQUEST COURSE SUPPORT

The ASC is always open to exploring new ways to collaborate and better support student success across campus. If you are thinking about adding support for your course, review the guidelines below and complete the request form to begin the process. Unsure if your course meets requirements? SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION PILOT GUIDELINES AND EXPECTATIONS 
Based on our certification through the International Center for SI, University of Missouri-Kansas City, the expectation for all SI supported courses is to engage 30% of the students enrolled in the supported section(s) of all courses. Therefore, the following guidelines have been developed for piloted support:

  • Year One: In each semester, a minimum of 15% of enrolled students in supported section(s) will participate in SI sessions. If Year One expectations are not met, the recommendation will be to discontinue the pilot and withdrawal support for the course.

  • Year Two: If Year One expectations are met, the pilot will continue to Year Two. In Year Two, a minimum of 25% of enrolled students in supported section(s) will participate in SI sessions each semester.

  • Year Three: If Year One and Two expectations are met, the recommendation will be to progress out of pilot phase and add the course to the ASC Course Support list. Courses on the ASC Course Support list continue to be evaluated for student participation, grade impact, and DFW impact each semester.

TUTORING PILOT GUIDELINES AND EXPECTATIONS 
Based on our program evaluation in collaboration with IR, the expectation for tutoring supported courses is to engage students in supported courses regularly throughout the semester (5-9 visits and 10+ visits are the regular and frequent users categories respectively); impact increases as participation frequency increases. Therefore, the following guidelines have been developed for piloted support:

  • Year One: In each semester, a minimum of five unique students AND a total of 20 or more visits are recorded. If Year One expectations are not met, the recommendation will be to discontinue the pilot and withdrawal support for the course.

  • Year Two: If Year One expectations are met, the pilot will continue to Year Two. In Year Two, a minimum of 10 unique students AND total of 50 or more visits are recorded.

  • Year Three: If Year One and Two expectations are met, the recommendation will be to progress out of pilot phase and add the course to the ASC Course Support list. Courses on the ASC Course Support list continue to be evaluated for student participation, grade impact, and DFW impact each semester.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SUPPORTING STUDENT ENGAGEMENT IN ASC SERVICES FOR YOUR COURSES

1. Know that students are most likely to utilize academic support services when they are recommended by their faculty member.

2. Make regular announcements in class about the support and remind students that the service is to help students stay current with the course material and is a great support for all students, not just students who are struggling to learn the material.

3. Share a link to the Academic Success Center in the LMS course: /asc. Students can search and schedule tutoring appointments, view the drop-in tutoring schedule, and view the SI session schedule through this website.

4. Ask students who performed below your determined 鈥渁t risk鈥 benchmark (e.g., earning a 鈥淐-鈥 or below) on each exam to participate in ASC services.

5. Provide a list of your 鈥渁t risk鈥 students鈥 contact information (email addresses and/or phone numbers) based on the first exam, assignment, or project to the ASC and we will conduct outreach to these students.
